I have quite a few borderline addictions. I will race home from a shift at work to make it on the couch by 11:30 p.m. for the Colbert Report. I should invest in stock of Del Monte green beans since I eat almost a can a day. I think about returning back to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico constantly, occasionally even dreaming in Spanish. And last but not least, you won’t catch me going a day, sometimes even an hour, without Twitter.
It hasn’t always been like this, though. I had never even heard of Twitter until I came to Ohio University my freshman year. I was interning with the Campus Involvement Center’s Community Service Office and was responsible for helping with the creation and management of their Twitter account.
To be honest, it was quite the train wreck. I had no idea how to properly utilize the platform, let alone deliver engaging messages. I didn’t even have my own personal Twitter account until November 2010. My first Tweet ever sent was also quite the train wreck, looking like a message taken from AIM.
I would like to think I’ve come a long way since the repeated r’s and smiley faces. Since then I’ve managed countless Twitter accounts, some which I created from scratch and others that were already highly established. From College Book Store to McDonald’s and Ohio University ImPRessions, I’ve gained a breadth of experience with the channel.
Apart from clients I’ve worked with, my personal account has also transformed immensely throughout the years. My first couple hashtags consisted of 20+ characters and I was that annoying type that posted updates on what type of salad dressing I was using. Today, I go to Twitter as my primary source of information whether it’s breaking news, entertainment or connecting with professionals in my field.
Twitter has quite honestly transformed my daily lifestyle. It’s the first thing I look at in the morning and one of the last things I see before bed (I have a no-electronic rule designated for 30 minutes before sleep so I can leisurely read). My emotions, thoughts and inspiration are formed by Twitter content that I view throughout the day, which is pretty powerful when you think about it.
Through this blog I will explore and document tweets that I find interesting, shocking or down right hilarious. Each post will pull a real Tweet from that week that has caught my attention. Taken From Twitter will be a deeper look at my thoughts, feelings and questions about 140 characters. Happy tweeting!
